Obituary of William L. Colby
Please share a memory of William to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
William Colby of Pemberton, New Jersey passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 2 at the age of 93 years old.
A loving family man and lifelong practical joker, Bill was born November 12, 1931, in Mount Holly, NJ, one of three children to Kenneth and Verna Colby. He grew up in Pemberton, NJ, where he met his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Sara Charlotte. Together they raised two sons, Michael and Craig, of whom he was immensely proud.
A graduate of Pemberton High School, Bill spent his career working for the State of New Jersey at New Lisbon State School as Cottage Supervisor and later at Johnstone Training and Research Center in Bordentown, NJ as Officer of the Day. After retiring, he worked for a time at N.A.D.E. Auto Auction and loved to remind his family that he was a “professional car driver” if ever they were in doubt. He loved nothing more than having his grandchildren along for a car ride in his last and most important job as a dedicated Pop Pop.
Bill enjoyed traveling, fishing, playing poker with his friends, and especially spending time with his family, which he was overjoyed to watch growing into a generation of great-grandchildren who made him light up in the later years of his life. He delighted in a good joke and will be remembered for his abiding sense of humor that always brought laughter to those around him.
Bill is preceded in death by the love of his life Sara Charlotte Colby (nee Price, wife), Kenneth Wayne Colby (father), Verna May Colby (nee Norcross, mother), Doris Bird (nee Colby, sister), Kenneth Colby (brother), and Shane Colby (grandson).
He is survived by his sons Michael Colby (Janette) and Craig Colby; his grandchildren, Lacey Colby Dern (Scott), Alyssa Moreno (Michael), Tyler Colby (Annie), Dylan Colby and Emma Colby; 6 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2025, from 12pm-2pm at Tilghman Funeral Home located at 52 Main St. in New Egypt, NJ.
