Howard and Barbara had two sons, Keith and Eric. In 1979, they bought a vacation home in Surf City, NJ, where Howard and his family enjoyed all that the seaside town had to offer. He loved to cook for and entertain his sons' friends, who lovingly called him Mr. E.
Howard donated both time and money to a number of charity organizations. He was a handyman who loved a good project. He loved gardening and woodworking as well.
In the Navy, he was stationed in Key West, FL, and fell in love with the area. He visited often with his sister, Margie, and other family and friends. He could be found cruising at sunset, swimming with dolphins, flirting with flamingos, touring the museums, and chatting with those around him.
