Obituary of Robert W. Rossell

Robert W. “Bob” Rossell, age 89, lifelong resident of North Hanover, Twp, passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2025 at home surrounded by his family. He was born in Cookstown, NJ on September 23, 1936 to the late Norman and Ruth (nee Lamb) Rossell.
Bob was a pioneering driver of modified stock cars. He began his career in 1958 at what is now New Egypt Speedway, New Jersey, with an old Chevy coupe and a junkyard engine. Bob competed and was victorious at the renowned northeast racetracks including Flemington Speedway and Old Bridge Speedway in New Jersey; Langhorne Speedway and Nazareth Speedway in Pennsylvania; Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, New York; Marlboro Motor Raceway in Maryland; and the Southside Speedway in Midlothian, Virginia. He captured NASCAR' s Battle of Bull Run at Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas, Virginia in 1963, and twice won the Garden State Classic at Wall Stadium, New Jersey. He was first to cross the finish line in the1963 New Yorker 400 at Utica-Rome Speedway in Vernon, New York. Bob was inducted into the Eastern Motorsports Press Association and the Northeast Dirt Modified Halls of Fame.
In addition, Bob was also a well-known and accomplished welder and fabricator, and when he wasn’t in his shop, he spent many hours tending to his farm and raising Black Angus beef cattle, which brought him immense pleasure.
Bob leaves behind his wife of 56 years, Carol Lee (nee Coleman); his two children, James Rossell and Kristy Liedtka and her husband Jeremy; and his two grandchildren, Lauren and Nicholas Liedtka.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation for Bob on Sunday, March 29, 2026 from 6 PM to 8 PM at Tilghman Funeral Home located at 52 Main Street, New Egypt, NJ 08533, and again on Monday, March 30, 2026 from 10 AM to 11 AM. A funeral service will begin at 11 AM at the funeral home with interment to follow at Jacobstown Baptist Cemetery located at 49 Jacobstown-Arneytown Road, Wrightstown, NJ 08562.
