Obituary of Felix L. McCrelles

Felix L. “Mac” McCrelles, age 84, of Cookstown passed away Wednesday, March 8 at RWJ University Hospital in Hamilton. Born in Anniston, Alabama he has been a resident of Cookstown since 1980.
Mac retired as a Master Sergeant in the Air Force after 26 years of dedicated service. He entered the USAF in 1952 and met his wife Sheila and married during his 1st Tour in England. He was stationed at Patrick AFB in Florida in 1957 and while at Cape Canaveral (6555th) he worked on Snark Missiles and the Titan I, II and II rockets. From 1967-1968 he was in Saigon, Vietnam during the Tet Offensive, from 1968-1973 at Seymour Johnson AFB in North Carolina, 1973-1977 at Bentwaters, England RAF Base and in 1977 he was stationed at McGuire AFB in New Jersey were he retired in 1978. After his military retirement Mac worked for Serve Air in Wrightstown and also worked as a Duty Manager in both the Recreation Center and the Officers Club at McGuire AFB. He was a life member of the VFW Post 6590 in Cookstown and the American Legion Post 455 in New Egypt. Mac belonged to the 20 Plus Club at the Base and he enjoyed calling bingo at the Cookstown VFW and the Cookstown Seniors. He was quite a handyman around the house and like to work on his cars and enjoyed feeding the birds. He was a jokester and was liked by all who knew him.
Mac was predeceased by his son, Steven McCrelles; a sister, Mary Sue Barnett and a brother, John McCrelles. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Shelia (Hicks) McCrelles; a daughter, Phyllis Kappus of Cookstown; a son-in-law, Carl Kappus of Kansas; two sisters and their husbands, Faye & Leroy Ford of Alabama and Shirley & Mutt Magouryk of Alabama; a brother-in-law, Derek Hicks of England; a sister-in-law, Dorothy McCrelles of Alabama and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mac will be held on Monday, March 13 at 8:00 PM at the Tilghman Funeral Home, 52 Main Street, New Egypt, NJ 08533 (www.TilghmanFH.com). Visitation will be on Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will be in Halls Chapel Cemetery in Weaver, Alabama.
