Obituary of Robert J. O'Dell

Robert J. O’Dell, age 90, of North Hanover, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on March 24, 2017, at Centra State Medical Center in Freehold, NJ. He was born the 2nd child of the late Alvin and Jenny O’Dell on December 16, 1926 in Richland Center, WI. Robert and his family grew up in Wellsboro, PA. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1944 to 1945. After his separation, he graduated from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn New York in 1948 with a bachelor of fine arts degree. Years later he married the love of his life, Louise A. Augustine of Morris, PA on May 12, 1951.
Robert had a long and successful career in commercial art and held several posts as an art director for Look Magazine, House and Garden and The New York Times. He was also a founder and principle of an advertising agency, KFO, in NYC in the late sixties through the early seventies, before opening up his own graphic design firm, Robert J. O’Dell Inc. He ran the firm with his son Edward, another graphic designer from 1973 until 1995. For most of his working life, he resided in Briarcliff Manor, NY.
Robert was a talented pastel artist who held several exhibitions in galleries both in Manhattan and Westchester County, NY. He retired to Seabrook Island, SC, with his wife in 1995 and lived there for nearly 20 years. He remained active in the community as art director for the local newspaper, The Seabrooker. Robert was an active member of his church and engaged as designer of the stained glass windows for the new local Catholic Church built there several years ago. In his free time, Robert was an avid cyclist and golfer.
In 2014 he moved back to NJ to be closer to his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Louise O’Dell; their 5 children, Robert Kirk, Thomas Scott, Sandra Sherant, Linda Louise and Edward Patrick as well as his beloved daughter in laws, Wendi and Melissa O’Dell; 5 grandchildren, Alexandra, Megan, Ian, Ryder, and Dallas. He is also survived by 2 brothers, Jack and Jerome O’Dell, and a sister Donna Merrill.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, March 27, 2017 at 10AM at the Church of the Assumption, located 28 Monmouth Rd, Wrightstown NJ 08562. Interment will be held at a later date at the Brig. General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to Catholic Charities.
