Obituary of Barclay D. Townsend

Barclay D. “Bart” Townsend, age 93, of Chesterfield passed away peacefully Friday, January 13 at home. Born February 7, 1918 in Columbus, he was a lifetime area resident. Bart was raised on the family dairy farm in Chesterfield and took over operations as an adult. Later he worked for more than 20 years in the transportation department at Northern Burlington High School. He continued his working career at Townsend Machine in Chesterfield. Throughout the years he has served as a deacon at the Sykesville Presbyterian Church, a member of the New Egypt Elks and as Committeeman, Mayor and Police Chief all in Chesterfield Township. Bart was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Irene (nee Falkowski), his wife of 17 years, Doris (nee Duffy), his brother, Harry and his granddaughters, Lisa Brandeisky, Aimee Benkert and Sarah Townsend. He is survived by his children, Barclay A. Townsend and wife Lorraine, Diane Rementer and Gerry Soto all of Chesterfield and Roy W. Townsend and wife Laurie of Florence; a sister, Betty Jane Tutek of Bordentown; his sisters-in-law, Helen Gola of Whiting, Evelyn Cummins of New Zealand and Fran Falkowski of Columbus; four grandchildren, Barclay M. Townsend and wife Deborah, Michelle Mullin and husband Guy, Kate Soto and Roy Townsend; eleven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours for Bart will be held on Sunday, January 15 from 2:00 to 8:00 PM at the Tilghman Funeral Home, 52 Main Street in New Egypt (www.tilghmanfh.com). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bart's memory may be made to the Chesterfield Township Emergency Squad, P. O. Box 269, Chesterfield, NJ 08515.
