Obituary of Ellen J. Schoenberg
Please share a memory of Ellen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Ellen Jean (Mitchell) Schoenberg, 88, of Allentown, NJ went to her eternal home on September 23, 2021.
Ellen was born on July 4, 1933 in Trenton, New Jersey. She was the fourth born of nine children to Louis and Hazel (Barton) Mitchell. She married Theodore R. Schoenberg on May 17, 1959 and he preceded her in death on August 28, 2001. She gave birth to one daughter, Susan Schoenberg on March 21, 1955. She, too, preceded her in death on September 9, 2019. She leaves behind her granddaughter, Devin Schoenberg of Allentown, dear friends Rita Matthew of Hamilton, NJ and Mary Lee of Wrightstown, NJ, her beloved four legged companion, Bella, along with extended family and many friends.
Ellen enjoyed drives with no destination along the countryside and wild flowers growing along the roadway, especially white daisies. Ellen enjoyed gardening, crafts, and making sure her beautiful home was immaculately clean. Ellen also had a love for animals which only grew with age. Her favorite animals were roosters and cows which showed in the way she decorated her home. She always loved dogs especially the schnauzers’.
Ellen was a lifelong resident of New Jersey. She graduated from William McFarland High School in 1951. She worked a variety of jobs in her younger years, including being a switchboard operator. She was also a waitress which is how she met a NJ State Trooper who later became her loving husband. In the 1960’s Ellen worked alongside her in-laws at their family liquor store in Holgate, LBI, NJ. However, her most prideful job was when she was a nurse. She graduated from Mercer County Vocational School in 1983.
Ellen was the type of person who always put others before herself. She was known to be caring, selfless, supportive, genuine and when needed, stubborn and beyond strong which astonished everyone until the very end. All of those qualities, amongst many more, are some of the reasons she made such an incredible nurse. In August of 1998 Ellen received a note from a patient that described her. It read, “A vision of speed and efficiency but with an underlying capacity for kindness and an almost fierce devotion to her patients.” That is how Ellen should be remembered today and always. She would have never allowed what happened to her to have happened to any of her patients.
