Obituary of Almalee H. "Lee" Davis

Almalee “Lee” Davis, 98, of Columbus, NJ passed away on January 16, 2022 at RWJ Hospital Hamilton after a brief illness. Born in Lumberton, she often regaled her family with tales of a childhood spent swimming and canoeing in the Rancocas Creek. She was a graduate of Mt Holly High School and Episcopal Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia. She began her nursing career at Lyons Veteran Hospital during WWII. After the war, she met and married the love of her life, Thomas R Davis. They moved to Wrightstown, NJ, Tom’s hometown and raised their daughters, Carol and April, there. Lee continued her nursing career at Mt Holly hospital, Ft Dix hospital and Deborah hospital as well as caring for many family and friends. Eventually Lee joined Tom in managing his local businesses consisting of several Esso stations, a Western Auto Store and Tom Davis Auto Parts and Garage in Wrightstown, NJ. Lee was happiest when she was enjoying time with her family and friends. Always very active, she dabbled in local politics in Wrightstown as a council woman and was an avid bowler and golfer. Lee took up bocce in her 90’s and loved weekly games of Mah Jong and cards with her friends. An avid Phillies fan, she enjoyed watching the games and talking baseball with family and friends. Lee was an active member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Columbus, NJ and enjoyed sending words of encouragement and kindness to her church family in times of need and celebration. She had a kind and compassionate heart and was always lending a hand where needed. Lee is survived by her loving daughter, April (Wayne) Bird of Chesterfield, grandchildren Briana (Jason Kelley) Bird and Denver (Kate Ruch) Bird, great grandson Henry Kelley, daughter in law Shirley Tyldesley, nephew Warren Harris, niece JoAnn Smith and many other loving nieces and nephews. She was the last of her generation in the family and will be greatly missed. Lee was predeceased by her parents Willard and Hilda Greenwald, her husband Tom, her daughter Carol and her sister Mabel Engle. A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, March 5, 2022 with a visitation beginning at 10:00am at the Wesley United Methodist Church, Columbus, NJ In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions can be made to: Wesley United Methodist Church, PO Box 25, 24573 E Main St, Columbus, NJ 08022 .
