On January 11, 2023, Ingeborg Hannchen Ward entered eternal life surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Straubing, Germany on December 4, 1921 to Johann and Luise Deringer. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, James Russell Ward; and her sisters, Traudel and Marianne. She is survived by her sons, Dieter and Thomas; daughter-in-law, Lorraine; her grandchildren, Brian and Kristen; and her brother Gunter. After the conclusion of World War II, she became an employee of the United States Office of Military Government for Bavaria as a typist and translator. While employed there, she met Sergeant James Russell Ward and they married on June 4, 1949 in Augsburg, Germany. In 1949, they returned to the United States and lived in Richmond, Virginia and Camp Kilmer, NJ, where they welcomed two sons, Dieter and Thomas. Ingeborg became a US citizen on April 17, 1952. During the next 20 years, the family was stationed and lived in numerous locations throughout the US, Germany, Thailand, and France. In the 1960’s, they purchased a home in Youngstown, New York and became very active in St. John’s Lutheran Church where Ingeborg was employed as the church secretary and played piano and organ. She enjoyed traveling and remained close to her family in Germany with many visits there over the years. She also enjoyed knitting, stitchery, classical music, in particular Andre Rieu, chocolate and Riesling wine. In 2003, Ingeborg and James moved to Deep Run in New Jersey to be closer to their children and grandchildren. In 2021, she celebrated her 100th birthday with a large gathering of family and friends. A visitation for Ingeborg will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2023 from 11 AM to 2 PM at the Tilghman Funeral Home, 52 Main Street, New Egypt, NJ 08533. Ingeborg will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery with her beloved husband James.
