Obituary of Thomas W. Scudder

Thomas W. Scudder, age 76 of North Hanover, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 7, 2023 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Hamilton, NJ with his loving family by his side. Born in Trenton, he was raised in Hamilton Square, NJ . Tom was a graduate of Steinert High School class of 1965 and a graduate of Delaware Valley University, Doylestown, PA class of 1969 with a degree in Agronomy and a minor in Entomology. Following graduation from college, he enlisted in the USAF and was stationed at Little Rock AFB, AR with the 308 Strategic Missile Wing as a Missile Facilities Technician (MFT) ICBM launch crew member with the 373 Strategic Missile Squadron. Later he became a Wing MFT Instructor Crew member. In 1974, he was stationed at Vandenberg AFB, CA as an MFT Instructor at the 4315 Combat Crew Training Squadron. After 10 years of active duty, he returned to NJ where he enlisted in the 108 Civil Engineering Squadron, NJ Air National Guard at McGuire AFB. He went on to be their First Sergeant and retired in 1990 as a Senior Master Sergeant after 21 years of service with the USAF and NJANG. Throughout his Air force career he was awarded the Master Missileman Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Combat Readiness Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and Air Reserve Meritorious Service Medal. In his civilian life, Tom was employed by Princeton Nurseries in Allentown, NJ for 13 years as the Manager for Plant Pest control and Soil Fertilization programs. In 1995 he was employed by the Plant Protection Division of the NJ Department of Agriculture as a field entomologist with the Philip Alampi Beneficial Insect Lab before his retirement in 2008. He and Evelyn (Van Horn), his wife of 45 years, loved to travel. In the winter they enjoyed visiting different Caribbean Islands, especially Aruba. In the spring and summer they visited as many states and National Parks as they could throughout the United States. Their other passions were ballroom dancing and watching professional golf. They went to numerous PGA tournaments including the US Open in Pebble Beach, CA in 2010, which was the highlight of their touring of PGA tournaments. He was predeceased by his wife Evelyn (Van Horn), parents Edward and Ethel (Leigh) and his brothers Ed and Timothy. He is survived by his son Matthew and wife Aimee of Hamilton NJ , his daughter Amanda (Scudder) McElwain and husband Michael of North Hanover NJ, grandchildren Gabriel and Abigail Scudder, Audrey and Grayson McElwain, and several nieces and nephews. A memorial will be held on Sunday August 13, 2023 at New Egypt United Methodist Church, Atkinson Hall, 38 N. Main Street, New Egypt, NJ between the hours of 1-4 pm with the service at 3 pm. Private Interment will be at BGWCD Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 350 Province Line Road, North Hanover, Burlington County. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to New Egypt United Methodist Church, 38 N. Main Street, New Egypt, NJ 08533. All arrangements are under the direction of Tilghman Funeral Home, New Egypt, NJ.
