Obituary of Nadia Waskiw

Nadia Waskiw, age 89, of Jackson, passed away at home on Sunday, August 13, 2023. She was born in Borisov, Belarus on November 6, 1933. Her mother passed away when she was very young, Nadia and her sister were raised in Ukraine, then the Soviet Union, by her father Dmytro and his wife Olena Petrowsky. During WWII, Nadia moved with her family to Germany to live safely with her grandparents. Nadia immigrated to the United States as a teenager, arriving in Louisiana and eventually settling in Northern New Jersey. Nadia married, and had two sons, Wolodymyr and Jurij. She later divorced, and met the love of her life, Henry Sawaryn, and they settled in the Rova Farms section of Jackson, where she loved living close to her church and her friends. Those who met her will always remember what a special person she was. She worked for many years as a packer at Drakes Bakery in Wayne, NJ. Nadia was a longtime member of St. Mary Russian Orthodox Church in Jackson.
Predeceased by her beloved Henry in 2013, and her son Jurij “George” in 2017; Nadia is survived by her son Wolodymyr “Walter” Waskiw; her grandson, George Waskiw; her brothers, Victor Petrowsky, and Mike (Carol) Petrowsky; her sister, Alexandra Rosenblatt Petrowsky; her nieces and nephews, Lily and Lee Boyer, Tony, John, and Mary Artymenko; and her close friends, Lydia Zylenko, Luba and Diane Babiej, and Olga Martz.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00am Friday, August 18, 2023 in the St. Mary Russian Orthodox Church, 316 Cassville Road Jackson, NJ, with a viewing beginning at 10:30am in the church. Burial will follow in the St. Vladimir Cemetery, Jackson. Arrangements are under the direction of Tilghman Funeral Home 52 Main Street New Egypt, NJ.
