Obituary of Charles E. Neuman

Please share a memory of Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Charles E. "Charley" Neuman, 82, of New Egypt, NJ, passed away on May 21, 2024, at Robert Wood Johnson Barnabas at Hamilton after a long illness. Charley was born in Neptune, NJ, to Albert and Lily Neumann on June 12, 1941. An overlooked spelling error on his birth certificate dropped the last letter of his last name, something which he had to explain his entire life. He graduated from Allentown High School in 1959. He joined the United States Air Force and served honorably from 1959 to 1963, reaching the rank of Airman 1st Class. He started learning his trade of carpentry during shop classes at AHS and perfected his craft while serving in the USAF. He owned his own construction company in the early 1970s, building and renovating homes with his cousin. He then worked for the State of New Jersey at New Lisbon before briefly moving to Florida for several years in the early 1980s, where he sold real estate. Upon returning to New Egypt in 1985, he went back to work for the state at Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey), where he worked for another 17 years in the Facilities Department's carpentry shop before retiring in 2002. He was a member of The American Legion Post 455 in New Egypt, and he loved classic cars, target shooting, researching old coins, and watching the Philadelphia Phillies. He loved animals and, along with his wife and daughter, rescued many cats and dogs over the years. And he never lost his love of building things. He built every house he and his family lived in, including three in New Egypt. He also built most of their furniture, always happy to create something new in his workshop. He had a wicked sense of humor and a huge, generous heart, and he loved and cherished his family and his friends dearly. Charley was predeceased by his beloved older brother, Heinz Neumann, who died while riding his bicycle in a tragic accident in 1952; his mother, Lily (Gotzian) Neumann; and his father Albert Neumann. He is survived by Margaret, his beloved wife of almost 57 years, and his only daughter, Lisa Neuman, both of New Egypt; his sister-in-law, Ethel Adams; his nephew, Marc Adams; two great-nephews, Tristan and Alexander; a great-niece, Adelyn; many cousins in New Hampshire and Florida; and special friend, Caryl Friedrich of New Egypt. He's also survived by his devoted Cane Corso, Abby. Friends are invited to gather on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, from 10:00 am to noon at the Tilghman Funeral Home on 52 Main Street in New Egypt. A funeral service will be held immediately following calling hours. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Popcorn Park Animal Refuge, 1 Humane Way, Forked River, NJ.
