Obituary of Ann Miller

Please share a memory of Ann to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Betsy “Ann” Miller of Cookstown, NJ, passed away at home on November 19, 2024. She was 87 years old. Ann was a well-known resident of the area having lived in New Egypt/Cookstown for 70+ years. Though a Mississippi girl at heart, Ann traveled around the country as a young girl. Her father was in the military. She often spoke lovingly of the beauty found in the Salinas Valley of California which was second only to the beauty of her hometown of Hazelhurst, Mississippi. Ann came to Ft. Dix with her family following her father’s military orders. Once here, she met and married William “Bill” Miller. In their 54 years married, Ann and Bill raised six children Billy (Miller), Sharon (Atkinson), Ruthann (Harper), Patrick (Miller), Kathleen (Rowley), and Heidi (Broadwater). Ann enjoyed gardening at home and farming at Sundown Farm in Cookstown. Friends and family alike could often find her in the field picking something that needed to be canned later that day regardless of high temperatures or nasty weather. Ann was of the “waste not, want not” mindset and made sure to get the most out of her harvest. Family and friends would find canned vegetables or jams on their doorsteps and knew exactly who left them. She loved all flowers and grew a rainbow of prized irises each year that always made her proud, especially the deep red raisin one that was almost black. She made the most beautiful grave blankets and wreaths for the winter - a skill passed on to her son, Bill - a true labor of love to bring some comfort to those mourning at the Holidays. She also made the best apple pie and coconut cake this side of the Mississippi River. Ann was an active member of the Cookstown United Methodist Church for many years where she often led the pre-ceremony praise songs and performed solos. The hymn on page 314 was often requested - In the Garden - and she announced it each time as “My mama’s favorite song”. Ann made sure that everyone knew that she was really a Southern Baptist and her home church was Antioch Baptist Church in Hazelhurst, Mississippi. Ann lived a blessed life, having seen each of her six children have families of their own. Ann was Mom-mom to 20 grandchildren - Chenoa, Jamie, Crystal, Billie Sue, Janette, Joshua, Adriane, Kyle, David, Patrick, Olivia, Matthew, Justin, Dylan, Rebecca, Kayla, Owen, Lauren, Kathryn and Charlie. Her grand-children blessed her with 30 more great-grandchildren - Colton, Wyatt and Tyler; Robie, Lylah, and Drew; Madalyn and Addyson; Aubrianna and Emelia; Thomas, Grace, and Stephen; Harlow and William; Ellana, Nadia, Aria, and Aston; Ethan and Ricky; Isabella, Juliana, and Anthony; Aubrey; Ellison and Jack; Kenny; Anthony and Hazel. Ann is survived by her sons-in-law, Ernie Atkinson, Mark Rowley, and Greg Broadwater, as well as, Liz Idell, Jerry Macauley, Mandy Schumacher, her special friend Nancy Macauley, many, many spouses of her grandchildren, nieces and nephews across the South, and friends here at home. Ann was predeceased by her husband, Bill Miller, her parents, Burnell “Mama Nell” and Charlie Daughtry, her beloved sister, Mary Francis Cheek and her husband Nolan, her brothers, Claude & Fred Daughtry and Ellis White, her daughter-in-law, Pamela Miller, and sons-in-law, Joseph Coker, Mike Harper, and Mark Jumper. Ann was both a “keen switch from out back” and a kind lap with a lullabye depending on which you needed that day. We all sought love, guidance, and at times, refuge at Mom-mom’s house. Whatever you needed, you found at Mom-mom’s house and it was given to you freely. We all hope that she is finally home and pray that Heaven looks just like Hazelhurst, Mississippi. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation for Ann on Friday, November 22, 2024 from 9 AM to 11 AM at Tilghman Funeral Home located at 52 Main Street, New Egypt, NJ 08533. A funeral service will begin at 11 AM at the funeral home with interment to follow at Jacobstown Baptist Cemetery located at 49 Jacobstown Arneytown Road. Friends and family are welcome to gather back at Sundown Farm on Hockamick Road in Cookstown following the services.
