Obituary of Donald J. Mathews

Donald J. ?Don? Mathews, Sr., age 86, of Wrightstown died Sunday, August 2 at home surrounded by his family. Born in Trenton, he was a resident of Chesterfield for 41 years before moving to Wrightstown 4 years ago. Don was an Army Veteran of World War II serving in Company C, 75th Medical Battalion with the 5th Armored Division and fought in Normandy, France, Germany and at the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member and past commander of the VFW Post 3002 in Lawrence Twp. Don was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a life member of the Fin, Fur and Feather Club in Clarksburg, a member of the New Egypt Elks Lodge No. 2457 and a member of the Keenagers Senior Citizens Club in Chesterfield. He was a retired plumber with Anthony Petito Plumbing in Trenton. Don is survived by his wife of 67 years, Rita (Lyden) Mathews; four sons, Donald Mathews, Jr. and wife Diane of Sykesville, Carl Mathews and wife Janet of New Egypt, Robert Mathews and wife Lynn of Sykesville and Paul Mathews of Wrightstown; a daughter, Patricia Wurpel and husband Richard of Starks, Maine; a brother Harold Mathews of West Virginia; a sister, Doris Stevenson of Somers Point; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 6 at 12:30 PM at the Tilghman Funeral Home, 52 Main Street in New Egypt (www.tilghmanfh.com) with interment to follow in the BGWCD Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Arneytown. Calling hours will be on Thursday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the funeral home.
