Obituary of Richard W. Tilghman

Richard W. Tilghman, age 79, of Springfield Twp., NJ and Lake Alfred, FL, formerly of New Egypt died Saturday, March 20 at home in New Jersey. Born in Jobstown, he was a lifetime resident of Burlington and Ocean counties. Dick was a 1950 graduate of Pemberton High School and a 1957 graduate of Eckels College of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia. He received his funeral director?s license in 1957 and in 1960 founded the Tilghman Funeral Home in New Egypt. He was a member and past president of the Burlington County Funeral Directors Association and a member of both the New Jersey State and National Funeral Directors Associations. Dick was a life member and past president of the New Egypt Vol. Fire Co., an exempt member of the New Jersey State Firemans Association, an honorary member of the New Egypt First Aid Squad, a member and past president of the New Egypt Lions Club, a life member and past president of the Woodruff Rod & Gun Club and he was one of the founders and a past member of the New Egypt Elks. He was a member of the Pyramid Lodge No. 92 F&AM in New Egypt, a life member of the New Egypt Historical Society and the New Egypt Chapter of Deborah. Dick was a former member of the Plumsted Township Planning Board and the Plumsted Township Board of Education. He was formerly on the board of directors of the Jacobstown Cemetery Association and a former member of the Zion Cemetery Association in New Egypt and was a member of the Juliustown United Methodist Church in Juliustown. Dick was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Mary Tilghman, his first wife, Ethel Sever Tilghman, his brother C. Robert Tilghman and sisters, Ann Collins and Mary Tait. He is survived by his wife, Mae Nixon Tilghman; his children, Debra Tilghman of New Egypt, Wendy Tilghman of North Hanover Twp., Douglas Tilghman of New Egypt, Dennis Tilghman and wife Mary Ann of New Egypt, Heidi Tilghman of North Hanover Twp., Mark Tilghman of Maple Shade, Kim Redford and husband Charles of North Hanover Twp., Wayne Gaskill and wife Carol of Medford and Lester Gaskill and wife Susan of Mt. Laurel; his grandchildren, Delaney, Charles and William Redford, Kyle and Tyler Emery, Robert, Timothy and Kevin Gaskill, Gregory Gaskill, Brad and Leah Schmitt and Andrea and Justin Rottkamp; his great grandchild, Kaylee; a sister, Jean Myers of Shamong; two brothers, Jim Tilghman and wife Dorothy of Bordentown and George Tilghman of New Lisbon; a brother-in-law, Allen Nixon and wife Margaret of Pemberton; two sisters-in-law, Thelma Tilghman and Elaine Granath both of Beverly and several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to the funeral service on Thursday, March 25 at 10:00 AM at the Juliustown United Methodist on Main Street in Juliustown, NJ with interment to follow in the Jacobstown Cemetery on Schoolhouse Road in Jacobstown. Calling hours for Dick will be on Wednesday, March 24 from 3:00 to 9:00 PM at the Atkinson Hall of the New Egypt United Methodist Church on Fort Avenue in New Egypt.
