Obituary of Charles F. Horner

Charles F. Horner, Sr., age 85, of New Egypt died Wednesday, December 29 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Hornerstown, NJ and was a lifetime New Egypt area resident. Charlie served as a Sergeant in the US Army during World War II as a paratrooper. He had worked as a fireman and engineer for the Union Transportation Railroad and was the last engineer to operate a steam engine in New Jersey. He later worked as the farm manager for Vernon Dancer Stables in New Egypt. Charlie served as a committeeman for Plumsted Township from 1980 to 1990, served as Police Commissioner, served on the Planning Board and Superintendant of Streets for Plumsted and also served as Mayor for 4 years. He was a member of the New Egypt Historical Society and served as the historian for Laurita Winery in New Egypt. Charlie was a member of the New Egypt United Methodist Church, the American Legion Post 455 in New Egypt and a member of the Republican National Committee. Charlie was predeceased by his father, Charles Horner,his mother Eva (Hopkins) Potter and step-father Kenneth Potter, his wife, Elizabeth J. ?Sam? Horner and his sister, Olive Goetz. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Charlie and Joyce Horner, Jr. of Cream Ridge and Kenny and Taffy Horner of Cream Ridge; a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Lyle Ross of Clay Center, KS; six grandchildren, Lisa Stromgren and husband Kevin, Kevin Ross and wife Pamela, and Elliott, Jarrett, Bradley and Jessica Horner; two step great grandchildren, Christian and Amy Stromgren and a friend, Jan MacDougal. Funeral services for Charlie will be held on Sunday, January 2 at 1:00 PM at the Tilghman Funeral Home, 52 Main Street in New Egypt (www.tilghmanfh.com), with burial to follow in Zion Cemetery in New Egypt. Calling hours will be on Saturday, January 1 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Charlie?s memory may be made to Van Dyke Hospice, 99 Route 37 W., Toms River, NJ 08755.
