Pickens H. Stewart, 84 of Browns Mills, N.J., passed away, Monday, August 22, 2011, in the embrace of Samaritan Hospice in Mount Holly. Pickens was born on February 20, 1927 in Waco, Texas. He was a long time resident of Browns Mills and a retired U.S. Air Force veteran of WWII, Korea and Viet Nam serving as a flight engineer. After retiring from the Air Force, he spent another 20 years working for the N.J.D.O.T.. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Charleston, S.C. In his younger years, he enjoyed flying his Cessna aircraft and was an avid bowler, water skier and fisherman. In his later years he enjoyed playing dominos, watching westerns and enjoying many family meals out together. He is remembered for making the best southern biscuits and gravy and was a very proud grandfather of his grandchildren. He was the son of the late Henry and Joe Marie Autrey Stewart of Mineral Wells, Texas and pre-deceased by his sister, Annie Wilson. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Rita S. Stewart of Browns Mills; daughter, Laura Schmitz of Endicott, N.Y.; son and daughter-in-law, David and Anita Stewart of Burlington Twp.; two brothers, Ben and Gordon Stewart of Texas; a sister, Loretta Hurley of Texas and his wonderful grandchildren, Amanda and Melissa Schmitz, Ashley Ruch and Steven and Jason Baumann. At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours. Burial will be private.
