Obituary of Robert G. Potts

Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Robert G. Potts, who turned 90 on 12/12/12, passed on to heaven on Friday, April 5 at the home of his daughter, Marilou Rohrer, with his beloved wife, Mary Lou, and family members at his side. He is predeceased by his parents, Charles E. Potts and Louisa Houston Potts, his two brothers, Major Richard H. Potts and Walter E. Potts, and one sister Mary Elizabeth Potts Creswell. In 1941, Robert was graduated from Trenton High where he received his varsity letter in swimming. Immediately after graduating he acquired a position on the Pennsylvania Railroad, as his father had. He started as a fireman and later was one of the youngest ever to be promoted to engineer. Robert was a 50-year member of the Free Masons. Robert and his brothers enlisted after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He was later stationed in Pearl Harbor with the Coast Guard awaiting deployment to Japan when the atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. He was a devout Christian and faithfully served the Lord with his time, talents and tithes. He was an active member of each church he attended, frequently served as a deacon or elder and could often be found mowing the church lawn or performing other maintenance tasks around the church grounds and buildings. This was especially true after his retirement and membership at the Whiting Bible Church. His loving example made a profound impression on his children and grandchildren. Robert resided in the Trenton area for 60 years before retiring to Whiting. There he joined the Old Guard and sang with their men’s choir, the Pine Barons. He joined three bowling teams and maintained a 200 average for over 25 years. One one team, he had his “Honey”, Mary Lou, as a teammate. Robert is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Lou Shaffer Potts; four children: Carol Potts Stevens (Steve Stevens) of Lawrenceville; Marilou Potts Rohrer (Bill Rohrer) of Jacobstown; Sandra Potts Bills (Donald Bills) of Mercerville; and Gordon A. Potts (Donna Johnson Potts) of Groveville. He leaves behind 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, in addition to many nieces and nephews, all of whom have been blessed for having shared a portion of his life. We will miss him very much. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 13 at the First Baptist Church of Mount Holly located at 1341 Woodlane Road, Eastampton, NJ 08060. Calling hours begin at 10:00AM, followed by a memorial service at 11:00AM. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to one of Robert’s favorite charities, either Colony of Mercy - America’s Keswick, 601 County Road 530, Whiting, NJ 08759, or The Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758541, Topeka, KS 66675-8541.
