Samuel O. Smith, Sr., age 74, of Philadelphia, Tennessee and formerly of Cream Ridge, NJ died Tuesday, December 31. Born in New Jersey, he lived there until moving to Tennessee in 2001. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the Army and was a retired mechanic for Sambol Construction in Toms River. He loved working with his hands, crafting things out of wood, but most of all he enjoyed life. Mr. Smith was predeceased by his father and mother, Oscar J. and Amelia M. (nee Newman) Smith and by his sisters and brothers, Anna Debow, Mary Robbins, Dorothy Chamberlain, Walter Smith and Charles Smith. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Dolores (nee Oakerson) Smith; a daughter, Cheryl Poppe and husband Paul of Wrightstown, NJ; a son, Samuel O. Smith, Jr. and wife Sandy of Sweetwater, Tennessee; two grandchildren, Brandi May Poppe and Jesse James Poppe both of Wrightstown; a sister, Bertie Thompson of Cream Ridge and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services and interment for Mr. Smith will be private at the convenience of the family.
