Obituary of Salvator DeMeo

Salvatore DeMeo, age 89, formerly of New Egypt, NJ died Friday, July 25 at
Reflections at Brandywine in Brick NJ. He died of complications from Alzheimer’s.
Sal was born July 29, 1925 in Richmond Indiana to Michael DeMeo (b.1890, d.1972) and Antoinette (Salce) DeMeo (b.1894, d. 1964).
The DeMeo family moved to Imlaystown NJ in the early 1930s. Sal left Allentown High School after the 10th grade to join the US Navy. He was a member of the class of 1945.
Sal went on active duty in November 1943 at the Recruit Training Center in Bainbridge MD. During World War II Sal served aboard USS LSM 204 in the Marianas, where he held the rank of Seaman 1st Class. He was awarded the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. Sal left active duty in April 1946, and returned to live with his family.
In 1950, Sal and his parents moved to New Egypt; where he resided till 2011, when he moved to Brandywine.
After discharge from the Navy, Sal joined the Construction and General Labor’s Union Local 172 of South Jersey. He worked with the union until 1990.
Subsequently, Sal went to work at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson NJ as a Safari Park attendant and animal care taker.
Sal was a life member of the New Egypt Elks Lodge #2457. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and a lifelong NY Yankees fan.
Sal is survived by his brother John DeMeo of Foley Alabama, formerly New Egypt NJ and his sister Anna Thomson of Salisbury North Carolina, formerly Freehold NJ.
Sal is also survived by 9 nieces and nephews who fondly remember “Uncle Sal”. His nieces and nephews include: Pat Sitzler; Mickey Casner; Kathy Donovan; Lois Smith; Gale Gahler; Jack DeMeo; Tony Condo; George Breese and Glen Thomson.
Sal was predeceased by his parents Michael and Antoinette DeMeo of New Egypt, his brothers Nick of Hamilton Square NJ, and Pat of Vineland NJ. Sisters Antoinette Condo of New Brunswick NJ, Nellie Casner of New Brunswick, and Nancy Breese of Ft. Pierce FL, formerly Freehold NJ. He was predeceased by nieces Rosemary Creighton and Nancy Curry and nephew Bobby DeMeo.
Funeral services for Sal will be held on Friday, August 1, 2014 at 6:30 PM at the Tilghman Funeral Home, 52 Main Street, New Egypt, NJ 08533 (www.tilghmanfh.com), with calling hours from 3:00 to 6:30 PM at the funeral home. Burial will be on Monday, August 4 at 9:30 AM at the BGWCD Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown.
