Obituary of Milton O. Dickerson

Milton Osmore “Jake” Dickerson, age 85, of New Egypt passed away Saturday, June 25 at home. Born in the Springside section of Burlington Township to Dudley A. Dickerson, Sr. and Elizabeth (nee Wilson) Dickerson. He was a loving and devoted son to his widowed mother until her death in 1985.
Jake served in the US Navy during the Korean War where he served on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Siboney (CVE-112). He graduated from Burlington High School in 1949 and worked as a mechanics apprentice for Brownie Groves. Jake also worked for Arrow Safety and drove a concrete mixer and worked as plant operator for Burlington Concrete, later known as Mt. Holly Concrete until his retirement in 1994. He was an exempt and life member of Independent Fire Co. #1 in Burlington Township and a charter member of the Burlington Township Exempt Fireman’s Association, a member of VFW Post 2692 in Mt. Holly and American Legion Post 294 in Pemberton. Jake enjoyed visiting flea markets, old car shows and working on cars, especially his beloved Cadillacs.
In addition to his parents, Jake was predeceased by his wife, Sarah F. (Tilghman) Dickerson (nee Grant); a step-daughter, Elizabeth Ruth (nee Tilghman) Leedy; and siblings Dudley A. Dickerson, Jr., Alcenia Painter, Eugene Dickerson, William E. “Emmy” Dickerson and Wayne Dickerson. He is survived by his baby sister and best friend, Elizabeth Cramer of Tarpon Springs, FL; two sisters-in-law, Ruby Dickerson of Burlington and Becky Grant of Cream Ridge; his step-daughter, Nancy Tilghman Lindroth and husband David of Augusta, GA; his step-son-in-law, H. S. “Duke” Leedy of Browns Mills; his step-grandchildren, Robin Leedy of Pennsylvania, Sheila Akers of South Carolina and Harold S. Leedy III of Tennessee and their families. Jake also leaves many nieces and nephews in NJ, MD, NC, SC, FL, LA, VT and AR and longtime friends Larry Corn, Russ Pierce, John Long and their families and great friend Leesa Kangal of New Egypt who was his caregiver. Many thanks to his son-in-law Duke Leedy for his concern and help. Jake was blessed with great family, friends and neighbors who were always there for him.
Family and friends may call on Friday, July 1 from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM at the Tilghman Funeral Home, 52 Main Street, New Egypt, NJ 08533 (www.tilghmanfh.com). Graveside funeral services will follow at 1:30 PM at the BGWCD Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown.
