I am so sad ... I was a teacher at Newcomb and John greeted me every morning with a growl and a grunt , but he never fooled me. I couldn’t have asked for a greater way to start my day. He made me feel that all was right at Newcomb and I was in good hands. It was a privilege to have worked with John for so many years. I know he will be deeply missed.

I don't know how I can start my day without your usual good morning growl. I've only known you for a few years but you made me laugh . Thanks for your help when I needed it but mostly thanks for the smiles. You are missed so very much. Prayers of peace and comfort for your family. We will all miss the blessing of you.

I worked with the amazingly kind John Hunter at Newcomb for 10 years. I will miss our 6 am morning talks in my room about family and military life. John was always taking care of my students and me. So many memories, the day I hit a deer on the way to school, the morning I set off the alarm by going into the building before 6 am, fixing my flat tire, finding tables and equipment for my students, watching over my students when they were not with me and letting me know if they needed my help, and most of all his big heart...that he tried to hide. When I moved to HFMS he would stop in my class and tease me about deserting him...with that smirk on his face. I can truly say I loved him for the incredible man he was. I am blessed that our life paths crossed on earth. Our world could use more men like John. Rest In Peace John.

I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to have worked with John over the past 15 years. I learned a lot from him. He would always show me how to fix the lawn mower that he say’s I broke. He was always willing to lend a helping hand. John was so passionate about taking care of the school, staff and students. I will definitely miss your growl. R.I.P., my friend.

There were only a handful of times that John and I had a "serious" conversation during the past two years that I have been at Newcomb School. In one conversation he shared that his choice of breakfast goes back to his military days when he had to eat "on the fly." He ate a Three Musketeers bar and a can of pepsi. That may be unconventional, but that was John.
The other conversation we had was about his son living in Africa. He described in detail the compound that he lived on with many creature comforts. I even suggested that he and his wife may want to go live there it sounded so good.
Other than that, the regular growls and occasional jokes were what was exchanged between us and appreciated . I will really miss seeing him in the hallways of Newcomb Middle School.

John I missed you today when I cut the grass, of course the lawn mower wouldn't start so I blamed it on you : ) You taught me alot in our 12 years, integrity, work ethic and to always help everyone. Rest easy my friend.

I am going to miss the OG "Original Grumpy", aka John "Grumpy" Hunter. He had the growl of a Big Bear with as big a heart for the students of his school. I had the honor of working with him for a little over two years at Newcomb Middle School. Not a day went by that John did not go out of his way for a Student or Staff member to help make their day a little better. John shared his love of his family with me and the affection he had for his cats. I was happy to have found out that he too was an U.S. Air Force Veteran and served in Law Enforcement in his prior life. I pray for his family, that they found comfort in knowing he was loved so deeply by his adopted family at Newcomb. Thank you for sharing him with us.
Sincerely, Art Shinn
